Best Free Text Editors For Windows & Mac

Free text editors? Text editors are mostly free. Right? Well purchasing a system comes with a default text editor, which is actually a basic editor.

If you want editors for coding the game or designing a theme, the default will not work as the advanced text editors do. It is nothing but designed for developers so they will find help/suggestions while typing.

The default text editors

  • The default text editor is good for keeping basic information like the “readme” file and information of software versions.
  • Advanced text editors will help developers to help to formate the whole script. This way it is best for debugging.

Text Editors for developers

Developer’s text editors are basically for game and web developers. In most cases, one editor will work for both using plugins or you can move to other editors available.

Plugins

Also, these text editors come with many plugins so one can easily install as per their needs. By keeping the few required plugins you have the advantage to keep the editor light.

Suppose you need to declare HTML doctype each time, you can get a plugin for this which will automatically create it whenever you create a new file. Similarly for PHP and Javascript plugin which will suggest you and keep you in the track.

Some of the text editors for developers that help

The main purpose of this list is (tag, attribute, spelling) suggestions. Here are few text editors, suggest you while typing any code or tag so you just need to choose or hit the enter button when you confirm.

NotePad++

Notepad++

Platform: Windows

Open-source text editor from Microsoft. This is my first text editor after the default on Windows. I like it but personally not the best compared to other editors for a few reasons.

It has limited features like auto-complete or suggesting the tag. Possible the issue in installation but I did find any. For basic editings like HTML and CSS, it is good for light work.

CoffeeCup Free HTML Editor

CoffeeCup HTML editor

Platform: Windows

It was my first HTML editor in the time when I was just practicing for the website theme. I used it very much for only HTML and a sort of CSS design.

I used to create simple HTML files with CSS. Mainly for practice. It was a nice HTML editor at that time when I have not seen any other editors with such nice tools that suggest the tags.

The free version has almost the same features as the premium. A few features are limited for days, purchase if you require it.

Visual Studio Code

Visual studio

Platform: Mac, Windows, Linux

Open-source code editor developed by Microsoft. It includes support for debugging.

I have used it for a few coding, mainly HTML. The best part I like is a suggestion(auto-completion) which really helps a lot when you have a large task to do. You would need extensions to do so like PHP, HTML, or other. Here it is very easy to install it.
